FibreSpy® Technology
Emulex's field-proven and award-winning FibreSpy technology is commercially available as fully integrated Fibre Channel SOCs (Switch on A Chip) and Embedded Storage Switches. Initially introduced in November of 2004, FibreSpy is a modular, speed-agile 4Gb/s embedded switch that provides storage OEMs with unprecedented design flexibility, and enables the deployment of a new breed of industry-first storage applications.
The FibreSpy SOC 804 switch-on-a-chip is available with two distinct applications: the SuperScalar Tiered Storage (804S) and the Integrated SAN Switch (804E) solutions. The 804S solution enables thousands of Fibre Channel disk drives with various capabilities to be interconnected within a tiered storage array, providing unmatched scalability and cost optimization. The 804E solution enables SAN switching to be integrated into the front-end of storage systems and server blades, providing the most cost-effective SAN switching available. Both FibreSpy solutions integrate seamlessly with Emulex's award-winning InSpeed® technology to deliver fully switched storage systems with the highest possible performance and RAS (Reliability, Availability and Scalability) characteristics.
FibreSpy is also available as Embedded Storage Switches, Model 850 and Model 870. These new switches are fully managed and are based on the Emulex FibreSpy SOC 804. Designed as a compatible replacements for existing InSpeed Model 350 and Model 370 applications, the FibreSpy Model 850 and Model 870 offer many of the same features within InSpeed such as: Stealth Intelligent Change Manager, Zoning, Trunking, and built in RAS functionality with the industry's best diagnostic tools. In addition, the FibreSpy Embedded Storage Switches are RoHS-5 compliant to meet industry initiatives as customers move to qualify next generation storage solutions.
Emulex has secured several design wins for the FibreSpy SOC 804 and Embedded Storage Switches, and additional storage OEMs are currently evaluating FibreSpy technology.
What is FibreSpy?
FibreSpy is a new family of SOC and Embedded Storage Switch products that are designed to be used as embedded components for both front-end and back-end applications. FibreSpy technology makes it possible to break through the barrier of 126 Fibre Channel drives, enabling larger, higher performance systems to be developed. It also enables the creation of tiers of storage for the backend and, for the front end an inexpensive, embedded connectivity option for the SMB market.
