Top Ten for Intel® Nehalem-based Xeon® Processor Platforms and Emulex® LightPulse® and OneConnect™ Adapters
-
Optimized System Efficiency - 30% Increase> MORE

System efficiency of Intel Nehalem-based Xeon processor 5500,
5600 and 7500 series server platforms are substantially improved
with their scalable, shared memory architecture and Intel QuickPath
Technology. When configured with Emulex LightPulse and
OneConnect adapters, efficiency increases due to optimization
around the Non-Uniform Memory Access (NUMA) architecture
and Message Signaled Interrupts eXtended (MSI-X). Testing of the
Emulex LPe12000 8Gb/s Fibre Channel HBA and the Intel Xeon
processor 5500 series server resulted in a demonstrated 30%
increase in CPU efficiency over the previous generation server.
-
Maximum I/O Performance - Increased by 3.4x> MORE
Server performance is maximized with the Intel Nehalem-based
Xeon processors and their integrated memory controller, PCI
Express 2.0, and innovative Intel technologies—QuickPath
Interconnect (QPI), Turbo Boost Technology, and Hyper-
Threading Technology. Emulex LightPulse 8Gb/s Fibre Channel
and OneConnect 10Gb/s Ethernet adapters complement
these new platforms with offloads for storage and networking
protocols to achieve maximum server performance. Testing with
the Emulex LPe12000 8Gb/s Fibre Channel HBAs with framelevel
multiplexing, out-or-order frame reassembly, and NUMA
optimized firmware and driver stack resulted in benchmarks of up
to 225% increase of IOPs per GHz of CPU resource and 3.4 times
maximum IOPs versus the previous generation servers.
-
Server Virtualization Scalability> MORE

The Intel Nehalem-based Xeon processors deliver innovations
that boost server virtualization performance by up to 2x based on
VMware vConsolidate benchmarks and increase consolidation
ratios resulting in the scaling of virtual machine deployments. With
an increased number of virtual machines, the requirement for a
scalable and high performance I/O architecture is critical. Emulex
LightPulse and OneConnect adapters, with their scalable designs
supporting over a thousand simultaneous exchanges and remote
logins, are ideal complements to these new Xeon processor-based
servers. In particular, the LPe12000 8Gb/s Fibre Channel HBA
supports 4,000 simultaneous exchanges and remote logins.
-
Virtualization Technology Enhancements > MORE

With hardware-assist capabilities in the processor with Intel VT-x
and in the chipset with Intel Virtualization Technology for Directed
I/O (VT-d), the Intel Nehalem-based Xeon processors improve
virtualization benefits through added flexibility and manageability.
The Emulex LightPulse and OneConnect adapters enhance these
benefits to include I/O connectivity improvements through N-Port
Virtualization ID (NPIV) and virtual ports. With virtual ports, Emulex
adapters virtualize I/O connections for flexible, simplified and
enhanced management of SAN connections in server virtualization
environments. The result is an ideal server virtualization solution for
virtual machine migration, load balancing, and disaster recovery.
-
End-to-End Power Management > MORE
The Intel Nehalem-based Xeon processors and their new
intelligent power technologies puts power management in all
platform components—the processor, chipset, and memory—with
5x as many operating states, a 5x reduction in idle power, and
5x faster transitions to and from low-power states. The Emulex
LightPulse and OneConnect adapters add PCI Bus Power
Management and PCI Express Active State Power Management
(ASPM) to enable Intel and Emulex to deliver complete end-to-end
power management for the green data center.
-
Reduced Energy Costs > MORE
Energy efficiency estimations for the Intel Nehalem-based Xeon
processor 5500 series show that customers who replace older
Intel servers will recoup their CapEx within as little as 8 months
and realize an estimated reduction of 90% annual energy OpEx.
The energy costs for SAN connectivity are further reduced with
the cooler temperature and lower power consuming Emulex
8Gb/s Fibre Channel HBAs and the LPe12002 Fibre Channel I/O
controller running a substantial 20° cooler than its competitor.
-
Accelerated Return on Investment (ROI) > MORE
Research indicates that upgrading to servers based on the higher
performing, more efficient Intel Nehalem-based Xeon processors
will accelerate ROI. The energy cost savings alone should pay for
the Xeon processor 5500 series-based servers in 8 months and
with up to 9x performance compared to currently installed singlecore
servers, the overall savings are substantial. The additional
platform solution cost consideration is the Emulex LightPulse and
OneConnect adapters required to achieve optimal performance,
virtualization, and scalability benefits.
-
Enhanced Boot from SAN > MORE
The Universal Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) with its
newer user interface and additional functionally is the primary
firmware reference choice for the Intel Xeon 5500, 5600 and 7500
processor based platforms replacing legacy BIOS support. For the
boot from SAN configuration in the UEFI environment, the Emulex
UEFI boot driver for LightPulse and OneConnect adapters enables
all the redundancy, availability, and serviceability advantages of
fabric connectivity for reduced system management costs and
increased uptime.
-
Reliability, Availability, and Serviceability (RAS)> MORE
With the Intel Nehalem-based Xeon processor 5500, 5600 and
7500 series, Intel QPI’s tightly integrated reliability, availability, and
serviceability (RAS) features ensure high reliability with implicit
CRC with link-level retry to ensure data quality and performance,
self-healing links, clock fail-over, and hot plug capability. The
Xeon processor 7500 series includes mainframe-class RAS with
Machine Check Architecture (MCA) recovery error correction.
With the Emulex LightPulse and OneConnect adapters, Emulex
implements end-to-end data protection with hardware parity,
CRC, ECC and other advanced error checking and correcting
to verify data blocks passed from the host interface through the
adapter are safe from data corruption.
-
Broad Qualification and Interoperability > MORE
Emulex works closely with Intel and its IHV Optimization Lab to
ensure that Emulex LightPulse and OneConnect adapters are
interoperable and optimized for the Intel Nehalem-based Xeon
processors. Together, the Intel Xeon processor 5500, 5600 and
7500 series in rack, tower, and blade server configurations and
Emulex LightPulse and OneConnect adapters in standard and
mezzanine form factors have been qualified and are available from
all major server vendors.
