Emulex Publishes Second Edition of Convergenomics – The Guide to Network Convergence Solutions with Contributions from Six New Collaborators

VMworld 2009 – SAN FRANCISCO, September 1, 2009
– Today, Emulex Corporation (NYSE:ELX) published the second edition of Convergenomics™ – The Guide to Network Convergence Solutions, which is a comprehensive introduction to network convergence. The book offers IT managers a resource to help them craft their next-generation network strategy and explains how to converge protocols, such as Fibre Channel and iSCSI, onto a 10Gb/s Enhanced Ethernet backbone. The latest edition includes new contributions from key ecosystem participants, including BLADE Network Technologies, Brocade, Fulcrum, Juniper Networks, Novell and Oracle in addition to previous contributions from Cisco, EMC, Panduit, Scalent Systems and VMware.

Convergenomics™ – The Guide to Network Convergence Solutions provides an assessment of the challenges facing the data center, the business case for network convergence, use cases and applications, an overview of the technology evolution and standards activities, a review of the building blocks for deploying a converged network solution, including software, storage, switches, host connectivity and management tools.

Supporting Quotes:
“Traditionally, data centers have used specialized networks to meet individual I/O connectivity requirements for networking and storage, as data centers continue to grow, IT managers are inherently facing huge network sprawl,” said Steve Daheb, chief marketing officer and senior vice president of business development. “Network convergence solutions simplify IT networking infrastructure and provide the foundation for creating an agile data center. Convergenomics – The Guide to Network Convergence Solutions helps IT managers simplify networking, reduce costs and increase business agility through network convergence.”

“Our RackSwitch and blade switch products provide a revolutionary approach for scaling out data center networks and driving down total cost-of-ownership,” said Dan Tuchler, vice president of Product Management and Strategy for BLADE Network Technologies. “The Convergenomics guide from Emulex is an ideal resource for our customers who are gearing up for this new approach and want a firm grasp on how to deploy cloud-ready converged networking environments.”

“Fulcrum’s FocalPoint family of 10GbE switch/router chips include critical capabilities to support lossless converged networks, such as Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) which cannot tolerate packet loss or high latency and jitter,” said Gary Lee, Director of Product Marketing for Fulcrum Microsytems. “We understand what’s needed for next-generation data center fabric designs, which is why we work closely with an ecosystem of partners like Emulex to help our customers optimize FCoE technology, and maximize performance as they deploy converged networking.”

“As an industry leader in developing high-performance network technologies to support next-generation data centers, Juniper Networks employs industry standards, carrier-class reliability, and integrated security to deliver an open network for converged communications,” said Andy Ingram, vice president of marketing and business development, Data Center Business Group, Juniper Networks. “Because our EX Series of Ethernet switches simultaneously advance both the economics and fundamentals of networking, we applaud Emulex for publishing Convergenomics—a technical guide with a similar goal in advancing network convergence.”

“We are pleased to be a part of The Guide to Convergenomics. A next-generation virtual infrastructure requires a converged network that can satisfy the demands of fail-over, live migration and fault tolerance for virtual machines and virtual storage, and be integrated by a common management of network access and quality of service,” said Robert Wipfel, distinguished engineer at Novell. “Novell and Emulex are committed to meeting the demands of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server customers and providing seamless interoperability as they begin this migration to a fully converged data center.”

“Emulex, whose CNAs have been certified with Oracle Enterprise Linux, works closely with Oracle to provide converged network support and investment protection for end users who deploy Emulex FCoE CNAs in Oracle Enterprise Linux and Oracle VM environments,” said Monica Kumar, senior director Open Source Product Marketing, Oracle. “The Guide to Convergenomics is another tool provided by Emulex in its ongoing efforts to make it easier for IT professionals to plan highly-available, scalable and reliable environments.”

“Converged networking offers many attractive benefits to data center architects deploying and upgrading to 10Gb/s Ethernet networking,” said Mike Doorhy, Vice President - Datacom, Panduit. “Panduit is pleased to partner with Emulex in helping customers optimize their cabling solutions and drive greater operational efficiency in building out their next-generation data centers.”

“The Guide to Network Convergence Solutions from Emulex highlights the ‘wire once’ philosophy behind the dynamic data center,” said Chandy Nilakantan, CTO, Scalent Systems. “Scalent V/OE offers integrated management to optimize workloads across physical and virtual resources, while maintaining seamless compatibility between emerging and legacy data center infrastructure.”
